Dear host family,

I am Dilah and I am from Indonesia. I recently completed my Master's in Cultural Anthropology at KU Leuven, Belgium. I really love traveling, experiencing different cultures, and meeting new people. That is why I applied to this program. I am very excited at the opportunity to exchange cultures with you. I would love to share Indonesian culture, such as traditional games, food, crafts, and stories. At the same time, I also want to know more about Chinese culture. I want to experience Chinese festivals, family meals, and other traditions firsthand. I would really appreciate it if you are willing to include me in your family’s practices.

Working with children is something I find rewarding. I have been working as an English teacher for young learners since I graduated from my bachelor's, and I recently got a TEFL certification.

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was when I volunteered as an English teacher at an elementary school in Taiwan, which became a foundational reason in why I want to learn Chinese.

When I first arrived there, I did not know any Chinese at all and most of the students were not yet able to speak in English very well, so we had a difficult time communicating at first. However, I tried incorporating more body language, use pictures/objects, and easier descriptions to help them understand what I was saying. Over time, I became friends with the students and we also played together outside of class hours. I was also touched by how they tried to teach me some Chinese words the way I taught them English.

I believe the best way to learn a language is through immersive practices in everyday life, such as playing games, reading books, telling stories, and having conversations during daily activities. I love doing many different things and adapting my teaching style to match each child’s interests and personality, so learning English can be exciting rather than like studying.

Aside from Indonesian culture and English language, I would also like to tell you about my journeys in other countries. The Maori culture from New Zealand is particularly interesting and I can share their legends through storytelling. I have also taken quite a lot of pictures of European buildings in Western and Eastern Europe, which I would love to show you. If there are any older children in the family aiming to study abroad or pursue further studies, I am also more than willing to help.

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the family. I hope we can learn from each other and have a delightful time together ^o^
