Au Pair

English

Give a new au pair a little buffer first.

One common mistake host families make is moving too quickly into “handover mode” as soon as the au pair arrives.

If she has just taken a long flight from South America, Asia, or another distant region, she may be dealing with transfers, jet lag, immigration, a language switch, and a completely new environment. Her first need is usually not to “learn the children immediately,” but to rest, feel safe, and have a little time to land.

Arrival day: keep it simple.

On the day she arrives, keep the plan light: pick her up, make sure her phone and Wi-Fi work, let her contact her family, prepare a simple meal, show her the room and bathroom, and let her shower and sleep. Avoid a formal family gathering or a long list of rules on the first day.

Days 1–2: rest and basic orientation.

For the first one or two days, focus on jet lag and the living environment. Her room, bedding, towels, toiletries, keys, emergency contacts, Wi-Fi, and the washing machine matter more than a big welcome ceremony.

Days 3–4: learn the local routine together.

On days three and four, show her the school route, nearby supermarket, pharmacy, and transport. This is also a good time for a first grocery trip together. Do not assume she will automatically be used to the family diet. Ask what she likes for breakfast, what she cannot eat, what staple foods or snacks help her feel comfortable, and which fridge items are free to take.

Days 5–6: move into shadowing.

Around days five and six, start a shadowing transition. Let her first watch how the parents handle school pickup, bedtime, and children’s emotions, then gradually let her take over small parts of the routine.

Welcome means care and boundaries.

Welcoming an au pair is not about treating her like a guest forever, and it is not about using her like an employee immediately. The goal is to make clear that this home has both care and boundaries.
