Hello how are you? Welcome~

Many Chinese host families conduct au pair interviews with little more than:
“Hello, how are you? Welcome~”
Then post-arrival conflicts arise—often because the real screening never happened.
After years of matching experience, we recommend these three essential questions to uncover an au pair’s adaptability:
1. “If our child refuses to speak English today, how would you engage them through play?”
(Tests: Creativity & Cross-Cultural Skills)
→ Listen for: Play-based solutions (e.g., drawing/roleplay). Avoid candidates who insist on “correcting” the child.
2. “Describe a recent time your plans got disrupted. How did you respond?”
(Tests: Resilience & Positivity)
→ Watch for: Problem-solving vs. complaining. Remember—they’re young adults navigating new cultures.
3. “Where do you see yourself in three years?”
(Tests: Intrinsic Motivation)
→ Many au pairs study Chinese or seek life experiences. “Figuring it out” is an acceptable answer!
Bonus: Document Screening Questions
For host families:
1️⃣ “Have you hosted au pairs before? May we see a sample schedule? How flexible was it?”
2️⃣ “Briefly describe your ideal daily routine in our home.”
3️⃣ “Is taking 2 days off occasionally for family visits feasible?”
For au pairs:
1️⃣ “What’s your family’s experience hosting au pairs?”
2️⃣ “What would a typical day look like for me?”
3️⃣ “How do you handle schedule changes?”
These questions reveal more than polished resumes ever could. When the answers feel right, you’ve likely found your match.
Pro Tip: Record video interviews—revisit nuances like tone and body language later.
Hope this helps you build harmonious cultural exchanges! 🌍✨
